A microsatellite study of bovine solute carrier family 11 a1 (Slc11a1) gene diversity in Mexico in relation to bovine tuberculosis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vázquez-Flores,Felicitas; Alonso,Rogelio; Villegas-Sepúlveda,Nicolás; Arriaga,Camila; Pereira-Suárez,Ana Laura; Mancilla,Raúl; Estrada-Chávez,Ciro.
Bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is a disease of socio-economic and public health importance and of significance to international trade regulation. Allelic variants of several genes have been implicated in the genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis in some human populations, but little is known in cattle. We surveyed 34 European, 18 Asian, 20 Creole and 23 hybrid bovines for polymorphisms of the bovine solute carrier family 11 a1(Slc11a1) gene, formerly known as natural resistance associated macrophage protein (Nramp1), gene by typing the cattle using two microsatellite loci closely linked to this gene. The microsatellites used were 311-22, located at the 3' untranslated region (3' UTR) of the Slc11a1 gene, and ARO28 situated about 0.6...

Assessment of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) stock delimitation in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel based on mark-recapture and genetic data ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon; Morizur, Yvon; Lambert, E; Bonhomme, Francois; Guinand, B.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fisheries are becoming increasingly abundant along eastern Atlantic coastlines, especially in the ICES sub-areas IV, VII and VIII, but they are still not being managed by the European Union TAC (Total Allowed Catches) system. Scientific information about these sea bass stocks is limited, but the fishery is currently managed or modelled based upon these data, separated into the ICES divisions. Clearly, failure to manage satisfactorily the fishery may lead to a decline in stocks. We therefore investigated the structure of Atlantic sea bass populations at eight microsatellite loci in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel and, additionally, at five selected loci in Ireland and Scotland. Genetic data showed no significant...

Genetic characterization of 18 novel microsatellite loci in northern pike (Esox lucius L.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wang,Jun; Wang,Chenghui; Qian,Long; Ma,Yuqing; Yang,Xinxin; Jeney,Zsigmond; Li,Sifa.
The northern pike (Esox lucius L.), an important predatory freshwater species, is undergoing significant population decline. In this study, 18 novel polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and used for assessing genetic variation in the Chinese Ulungur and Hungarian Balaton populations of the species. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 13, observed heterozygosity from 0.154 to 0.920 and expected heterozygosity from 0.145 to 0.921, thereby indicating the specific usefulness of these suites of markers for investigating genetic variability.

Genetic connectivity of the coral-eating sea star Acanthaster planci during the severe outbreak of 2006-2009 in the Society Islands, French Polynesia ArchiMer
Yasuda, Nina; Taquet, Coralie; Nagai, Satoshi; Yoshida, Terutoyo; Adjeroud, Mehdi.
Occasional population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns sea star, Acanthaster planci, are a major threat to coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific. The presumed association between the serial nature of these outbreaks and the long larval dispersal phase makes it important to estimate larval dispersal; many studies have examined the population genetic structure of A.planci for this purpose using different genetic markers. However, only a few have focused on reef-scale as well as archipelago-scale genetic structure and none has used a combination of different genetic markers with different effective population sizes. In our study, we used both mtDNA and microsatellite loci to examine A.planci population genetic structure at multiple spatial scales (from <2km...

Stock structure of the swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwest Indian Ocean: A preliminary study ArchiMer
Jean, Claire; Bourjea, Jerome; Jouen, Emmanuel; Taquet, Marc.
Stock structure of swordfish (Xiphias gladius Linnaeus, 1758) from four areas of the South West Indian Ocean was conducted using Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) on mtDNA control region and six amplified microsatellite loci. No significant differences were found among the four locations using either molecular technique. Most variability was found within populations, with only a small proportion of variation among samples, suggesting a unique stock of swordfish in the South West Indian Ocean. The sample size of this study is too small to reveal significant structure among the sampling locations. These results are baseline for a future larger scale project in the whole Indian Ocean.

Traits biologiques et exploitation du bar commun Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) dans les pêcheries françaises de la Manche et du golfe de Gascogne. ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon.
Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (Linné, 1758) is a fish of major interest in France and in the British Isles. It is the main target species for some anglers and a growing number of professional fishermen. In spite of this, the reproduction of sea bass in natural environment, the identification of its populations, as well as the fleet participating to and the level of its exploitation are poorly known. Thus, in the perspective of a future management of the bass fisheries, this thesis collected required data for the analysis of the sea bass resource in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. A first chapter describes to the principal biological and ecological characteristics of Dicentrarchus labrax. The five following chapters deal successively with: (i)...
